Dmitry Utkin (Дмитрий Уткин) is the former commander of the Wagner Group PMC, which he founded and led from 2014 alongside businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, participating in various conflicts around the world to help spread Russian influence including Donbas, Syria and Libya.

Utkin has a particular obsession with Nazi imagery, wearing tattoos of an SS rank badge and the Reichsadler, the national emblem of the Third Reich, using the SS logo as a signature and “Heil” as a greeting, which Prigozhin dismissed as him “trying on Nazism” “in order to defeat” it, despite his blatant Nazi ties he was celebrated as a hero by the Russian state and met President Putin.

These friendly relations were rapidly shattered however when Utkin and Prigozhin led a mutiny of the Wagner forces in 2023, taking control of Russian territory and proceeding in a convoy towards Moscow with the goal of replacing the country’s military leadership, although an agreement was reached to end the mutiny peacefully, Utkin, Prigozhin and a number of other officials were killed in a plane crash 2 months later.
